The late '90s ushered in a new wave of animal horror movies, with films like 1999's Lake Placid and Deep Blue Sea. But two years earlier, the trend started with Anaconda.

Starring Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson and Ice Cube, among others, the film sees an expedition through the Amazon go horribly wrong when the adventurers encounter a giant man-eating anaconda.

The film was a hit, grossing over $136 million at the global box office and cementing Lopez as not just a musician, but one of Hollywood’s leading stars. Since then, Anaconda has received three sequels, a crossover with Lake Placid, a remake and, now, a meta reboot starring Jack Black and Paul Rudd.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly in March 2025, Black said that the new film is “a lot funnier than the original,” but added that, “it does have a lot of the original vibes in terms of the scary parts. It's a horror film for real, but it's also got some clownin' for sure."

To catch up on the series before watching the new Anaconda film, here's where to watch all seven movies in the Anaconda franchise.

In the original Anaconda film, a group traveling through the Amazon comes across a grifter (Jon Voight) who makes their lives a living hell. But things get even worse when they stumble upon giant, deadly, 40-foot anacondas.

In a 2021 interview with SiriusXM, Wilson revealed that there was a mini Anaconda reunion on the set of his rom-com Marry Me, where he costarred alongside fellow Anaconda alum, Lopez.

“Jon Voight was filming nearby us one day in Brooklyn,” Wilson said on the radio show, “and so he came over to visit, and so you had all three of us there, so that was very much an Anaconda reunion that day.”

Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid was the franchise’s last theatrical release for over 20 years. In the film, a group of explorers search through the Borneo jungle for a mystical flower believed to have massive potential in the field of medicine. But they encounter a bunch of giant, deadly anacondas along the way, and the scientific expedition becomes a fight for their lives.

The film starred KaDee Strickland, who would go on to star in Private Practice, and Nicholas Gonzalez, who became known for the drama The Good Doctor. While Hunt for the Blood Orchid was met with mixed reviews for not being as good as the original, it remained a fun watch for franchise fans.

The third film in the series was a Syfy Channel original movie and starred David Hasselhoff. Like all proper Syfy movies of the 2000s, Anaconda 3 is packed with low budget CGI and comical acting, both of which have earned the network a cult fanbase.

This time around, an anaconda is being experimented on in a secret facility in Romania using blood orchids (the mythical flower from the previous movie). Naturally, it gets out, the killing spree begins and viewers get to watch The Hoff go head-to-head with a 50-foot mutated snake.

Anacondas: Trail of Blood (2009)

Serving as a direct sequel to Offspring, 2009’s Anacondas: Trail of Blood sees more mutated anacondas on the loose, and in typical Syfy Channel style, the movie is absurd.

From anacondas that don’t even look like anacondas anymore to a chase scene shot entirely on a green screen, the film is a fun and silly addition to the network’s long history of made-for-TV movies.

Lake Placid vs. Anaconda (2015)

By 2013, Syfy had fully realized its reputation and, in a meta move, the network decided to lean into its notoriety with Sharknado — a deliberately absurd, silly movie that was fully aware of just how bonkers it was. The film became a smash hit, leading the way for more comedy Syfy movies … like Lake Placid vs. Anaconda.

The film stars horror legend Robert Englund and centers around a few of the genetically-altered blood orchid anacondas facing off against a giant saltwater croc. Even worse, because of the blood orchid experiments, there’s now a nest of mutated “crocaconda” eggs waiting to hatch. Lake Placid vs. Anaconda is loaded with tongue-in-cheek moments, corny one-liners and plenty of snake puns.

Anaconda: Cursed Jungle (2024)

Anaconda (2024)

In 2024, a Chinese remake of the original film premiered (also known as Hundred Poisons Rampage). In the film, a group of circus performers are invited to the jungles of Southeast Asia for a gig. But as they traverse the rainforest in a riverboat, they’re stalked by a giant anaconda.

Despite having a different premise and a new cast, the movie plays out similarly to the original, and fans of the 1997 movie will notice many similarities. It was also the first Anaconda movie to be made with any significant budget since Hunt for the Blood Orchid 20 years prior.

Doug (Jack Black) and Griff (Paul Rudd) in 2025's Anaconda

2025’s Anaconda is another meta reimagining of the original movie. In the film, two friends, Doug (Black) and Griff (Rudd) want to make a reboot of their favorite movie: Anaconda. With no budget and little talent, they head to the Amazon with some pals and hope for the best. But when an actual giant anaconda emerges, everything changes.

The movie blends action, horror and comedy, and also stars Thandiwe Newton, Steve Zahn and Selton Mello. In a December 2025 interview with IGN, Mello said that the movie isn’t really a remake or a reboot, instead calling it “very original."

“It's meta," he told the outlet. "So you have adventure, a lot of action, a little danger, and humor.”

Anaconda released theaters on Dec. 25.
