- Haylie Duff and Matt Rosenberg have broken up 12 years after getting engaged on April Fools' Day 2014 following a year and a half of dating.

- The former couple share daughters Ryan Ava Erhard, 10, and Lulu Gray, 7.

- Duff previously said that they were putting off wedding planning until after they were done having kids.

Haylie Duff and Matt Rosenberg are calling off their engagement.

A rep for Duff told PEOPLE that she and Rosenberg "ended their relationship around the first of the year," adding, "She asks for privacy at this time in protection of her young daughters." Rosenberg popped the question on April Fools' Day in 2014 after having dated for a year and a half.

“Matt just took me by total surprise and proposed … on April Fool’s [*sic*] Day of all days! The moment was genuine and sweet (like him!) and I couldn’t wait to say yes!” Duff wrote on her blog, The Real Girl's Kitchen, in 2014. “We are so excited and happy to share our wonderful news with everyone!"

After getting engaged, Duff told PEOPLE that she and Rosenberg were well matched. “He just complements me so well,” she said. “We’re very different in a lot of ways. I think really when he became close with my family, and I saw how simpatico everybody was, that’s when I was like, ‘Okay, so not only do I love him, but they love him too.’ And I feel like that’s the way it’s supposed to be.”

The former couple put a pause on wedding planning before welcoming Lulu. “We talk about it and think, ‘Maybe now we're ready to do it' and then life happens and toddler happens,” Duff told PEOPLE in 2018.

“We feel married already and it hasn’t become something that both of us are gung-ho about,” continued Duff. “Maybe after the craziness of a new baby dies down we’ll be ready to talk about it again.”

The actress also spoke about why she and Rosenberg weren't married yet in a May 2021 interview with *Access Hollywood* for the movie *The Wedding Pact II: Baby Pact*. Duff said the topic has become "more of a conversation" with their oldest daughter. "We didn't plan to not get married, we just have been busy having kids and filming shows [and] with him working. Life kind of got away from us, to be perfectly honest with you."

"When we did talk about it, it was kind of like, well, if it was ever important to the girls, then I guess we'd do it," Duff continued. "Now, any time I get dressed up, in something nice, Ryan is like, 'Mommy, that's so beautiful. Are you gonna wear that to your wedding?'"**

She added that there were no wedding plans in the works at the moment. "We also thought that as soon as we were done having kids we would do it, so now here we are. Even though I look like I'm not done having kids, I'm done having kids," Duff quipped, while was wearing a pregnant belly prop at the time of the interview.
